What is counselling?
Counselling is talk therapy, where a trained counsellor listens to you speak about your thoughts and feelings and supports you to work through any difficulties and find alternative ways to deal with emotional issues.
What is the purpose of the free 20 minute consultation?
The free 20 minute consultation is an ideal opportunity to discuss your needs and see if Conscious Rebel Counselling is the best fit for you and the counsellor.
How long does a counselling session last?
Counselling sessions last 50 minutes and will take place once a week, at the same time and same day.
How many sessions will I need?
Counselling is more of a marathon than a sprint. We suggest booking six to twelve sessions in advance because it will give you space to breathe, and a chance to explore issues in more depth. Consider it a gift to yourself.
How might I feel before a session?
If this is your first time speaking to a counsellor, then you might feel uncomfortable, scared, or anxious. We expect this, because you’re about to take a big step into the unknown. Your counsellor is aware of this, and will do everything to help you feel more at ease.
Once you get a few sessions under your belt and grow in confidence, it won’t seem as scary. Always remember, the counsellor is there for YOU to help you work things out and understand yourself better.
What about confidentiality?
Everything you talk about with your counsellor will be completely confidential. We will break confidentiality though if your counsellor thinks that you or someone else is at risk. However, the counsellor would always speak with you about it first, before speaking to someone else.
What will my first counselling session be like?
Your counsellor will introduce themselves, establish any boundaries and tell you about the way they work. After that, they may invite you to share about what brought you to counselling, and what you might like to work on together in future sessions.
What will I talk about in a session?
Sometimes you will know exactly what you want to talk about and other times you won’t know until you are in the session. There will even be times when you might struggle to find the words and moments of silence. It’s normal. We encourage you to take your time. If you feel stuck, your counsellor can help you decide about what you want to focus in the session.
Does counselling bring up lots of uncomfortable emotions?
Sometimes counselling can be a challenge, and you may experience lots of emotions. The pain is actually your resistance to feeling the emotions, not the emotions themselves. Some sessions will seem more helpful than others. Either way, it’s all okay. The counsellor will hold the space for you and meet you wherever you are at.
Is it possible to change the past?
You can’t change the past. But you can change your relationship to it. Having a safe and non-judgemental space to share memories can help you see things differently and make peace with the past.
How might I feel after a counselling session?
This can depend on what you decide to bring or what surfaces during the session. Overall, the goal of counselling is to help you understand yourself better and feel more alive. However, talking about issues can bring up lots of different feelings, and there will be times when you end a session feeling worse than before you started. These uncomfortable feelings are temporary and will pass. Being kind to you in the middle of the struggle is an essential part of the journey. We recommend turning off your phone and taking some ‘you time’ after the session to reflect or journal.
How does online counselling work?
Conscious Rebel Counselling uses Zoom, which is secure and free for you to use. Also, we use the best internet to ensure the quality of connection you deserve for our conversations.
To get the best from working with an online counsellor, we suggest you familiarise yourself with Zoom and invest in a decent Wi-Fi connection.
Once you have booked your session, we will send you a link to the meeting a couple of days before. At the time of the session, we recommend you find a quiet space, close the door, and turn off your phone.
Is online counselling as effective as face to face?
I have seen the transformative effects of online counselling firsthand. Also, it’s convenient because you still get the support you need, but in the comfort of your own home, which means no travelling or parking. This makes sessions more easily accessible and affordable, and can help create a better work/life balance.
What if I need to cancel a session?
Sometimes life gets in the way, and you may need to reschedule a session. In the event of a cancellation we request you give at least 24hrs notice.
Do you have Insurance?
Conscious Rebel Counselling has professional indemnity insurance, and we hold a basic DBS certificate, which is required by law.
